Your safety is
our responsibility
CORGI was founded in 1970 as the Confederation for the Registration of Gas
Installers, and was given the task of ensuring that gas work was carried out
safely.
Initially, gas installers could become affiliated to CORGI on a
voluntary basis. In 1991, however, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) asked
CORGI to maintain a register of competent gas installers in the UK.
CORGI became
the 'Council for Registered Gas Installers'. CORGI's responsibilities have now
extended to include Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man and they are also working
to improve gas safety in The Channel Isles.
Registration is now a legal requirement for businesses and self-employed
people working on gas fittings or appliances. Around 44,000 gas installation
businesses employing approximately 95,000 gas fitting operatives are currently
registered.
CORGI works to a tight remit prescribed by the HSE. As well as operating the
register of competent gas installers, CORGI:
Over the last 30 years CORGI have become a
leading authority in gas safety issues and of course, registration schemes.
Their
expert knowledge is now being put to use outside of the CORGI registration
scheme.
