Domestic
Heating Systems

The Government’s Energy White
Paper states that from April 2005, all new boilers installed in England and
Wales should be either SEDBUK A or B rated. These are
generally known as High Efficiency boilers (HE) or
Condensing
boilers.
A condensing boiler is a
high efficiency modern boiler that incorporates an extra
heat exchanger so that the hot exhaust gases lose much
of their energy to pre-heat the water in the boiler
system. When working at peak efficiency, the water
vapour produced in the combustion process condenses back
into liquid form releasing the latent heat of
vaporisation.
Types of Heating Systems Available for Your Home
Combination
This system provides instant hot water and central heating from a single
appliance. Does not need a storage cylinder or
expansion cistern in the loft. Available in various sizes, some
with integral hot water storage buffers to suit various family needs. They are
generally wall mounted.
Storage
This system is generally a floor standing appliance, which provides central
heating and a plentiful supply of hot water. Suitable for homes with a high demand for hot water.
Electric
If you are not connected to mains natural gas, and do
not want the inconvenience of having to store either
propane, oil or solid fuel, then an alternative
proposition is a small electric boiler. These units are
best suited to smaller properties such as flats and they
provide the convenience and flexibility of a typical
radiator heating system without the problem of having to
route a flue to an outside wall.
Domestic hot water requirements can be satisfied
independently via a storage cylinder which is heated
directly from an electrical supply.
Heating only, open vent
These are either wall hung or floor standing and provide
heating and hot water via a
storage cylinder to all sizes of homes. They generally
require an open vent plus a feed and expansion cistern
in the loft.
System Boilers
System boilers provide central heating and also supply hot water indirectly via
a hot water cylinder sited typically in an airing cupboard. They have a built-in
pump and equipment which enables them to be used on a sealed central heating
system.
